Do you religiously check your credit report every 6 months or even every year? Chances are most of us would say no. Identity Theft is very real and can happen to anyone. It has been defined that “Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, like your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.” - FTC
According to statistics 9 million Americans fall victim to ID Theft every year and that figure will continue rise unless we(the public) defend our selves because ID thieves come up with new scams to steal valuable information.
What can we do to protect our selves?
- Educate ourselves about ID Theft. Read: Federal Trade Commission site.
- Use a Credit Monitoring Service. My personal choice is: Equifax Credit Watch Gold 3-in-1. Reviewing the credit report every 6 months is not enough because plenty of damage can be done in just days or weeks. With Equifax service, I get an alert when there is change in my credit report. For $12.95 a month, it’s a small price to pay compared to the consequence of not having it. I took the alert system seriously when I was notified that there was someone trying to get a credit account from Dell using my information. From my experience, Equifax customer service is very efficient. I had a very short hold time on the phone and the customer service agents are knowledgeable of their products not to mention I was able to understand what they were saying.
- Minimize your risk.
- Make others aware.
- Check your credit report for free now.
Note: I am a happy customer of Equifax.
