Starting Your Own Business

There is rise of entrepreneurs here in the US. According to Small Business Fortune(SBF) magazine’s Everyone wants to Start a Business article. I believe that it’s because people want to get out of the rat race and from being corporate drones. Among different schools, there is a top list identified by SBF for the best schools for entrepreneurs.

Have I not accepted a job offer here in the states, I had a chance of being sponsored by a multi-national semiconductor company I interviewed with for an MBA. It was my plan C, I think my back-up plan was until plan Z. But then I have really no regrets of coming over or else things would have been different and I wouldn’t have my Lil K now.

Looking into an MBA program here in the US and realizing the costs is enough to make me think really hard before getting into it. I don’t want to go on $40,000 debt to go to Harvard. It’s a good thing that there are two universities nearby that are on the list for me to consider: Howard University and University of Maryland(where Google’s Sergey Brin, Co-Founder & President[he has a degree with honors in mathematics and computer science ] and Carly Fiorina, MBA ’80, she became the CEO of HP in 1999 when HP bought Compaq). With a price tag of $7,227 for UM’s program, it looks more attractive. I know of people who went to IVY leagues and are still indebt upto their eyeballs with student loans after 5 years of graduating. I just think it’s a wrong finanacial move for me and my family. I would actually prefer someone else pays for it :) .

If you are just looking into starting a business and have no plans of taking MBAs, you can still learn a whole lot about running a business from the Small Business Administration. There are people who are really good at what they do like chefs who want to start their own restaurants and should learn how to run a business first. Being a restaurant owner is not just about planning the menu anymore, there are books to balance and taxes to pay among other things to keep the business afloat.

I have worked in start-up companies, some have succeeded and one have failed. I have learned alot from those experiences and that’s why I have so much respect for people who have the grit and guts to put up a business from scratch.
