The Solar Decathlon winners were announced today and among 20 deserving universities chosen world wide to compete by the US Department of Energy, University of Maryland won 2nd place beating Cornell, MIT, Duke and other universities! I should have known about this earlier this week so that I could have at least made my way to Washington DC to cheer for MD! Congratulations to the First Prize winners from Germany: Technische Universität Darmstadt. I like made in Germany stuff too!
The objective of the International competition is to design and build an attractive solar power and energy efficient house.
“Why does the Solar Decathlon exist? To challenge the student competitors — the “Solar Decathletes” — to think in new ways about energy and how it impacts our everyday lives. To provide those students with a way to show and tell the world what they have learned. To push research and development of energy efficiency and energy production technologies. And to encourage all of us to act responsibly when making energy choices.” US Department of Energy

Guess who supplied the Maryland team with the construction materials for that house? YES, Turner Construction Company, my husband’s company!
Wow! That’s awesome Darlene!
