Hello AT&T Goodbye Sprint

December 13, 2007 – 12:10 pm

Look, I have been extremely patient with my old wireless phone provider. I arrived here at the States 7 years ago and that’s how long I have been with them. I don’t like breaking relationships but if it’s not really working then I have no choice but severe the ties . I can’t go on paying $34/month for a cellphone that drains as soon as I turn it on and a wireless network that I can’t use when I go places(I stay within areas with civilization). All I need is a real working wireless phone. I only want to have a dependable way of communicating where ever I go within the Continental US. I only require a signal and not some multi-functioning entertainment system in my phone. Just imagine that I got used to turning on my 2 year old phone whenever I need to call someone, I can’t get called because I need to turn it off to conserve battery. Why not buy another battery you say? Well, the battery drain happened early on when the phone was new and I didn’t want to buy a battery for a newly bought phone. So I have been waiting for my 2 year contract to expire and I didn’t realize that I could have switch last July! (I tried accessing my online account once and the site was down so it just slipped my mind to check when my term was up.)

Now, I have a real working Nokia 6555 phone with a signal at places I normally go to! I still have to remind myself these days that it’s OK to turn the phone on because the battery is not going to drain that quickly just being on. I will only buy Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola phones from now on.

Of course, I enjoy the added features(something to tinker with when stuck in traffic). I also got a chance to discover 3G which stands for third generation, “3G networks are wide area cellular telephone networks which evolved to incorporate high-speed internet access and video telephony” -from Wikipedia.

We bought the phone at a Costco kiosk(yes, I know… can’t help it but I just have to mention Costco) and it was really convenient that they have them there. The phone normally costs around $100 but with signing up for a 2-year agreement, we only paid $29. So if you want to call me on my new cell phone, my number is ###-###-#### :) ! To tell you the truth, I can’t recall my new number yet.  I used to have an NJ number but  I now prefer Maryland number.

My friends who were with Sprint also switched networks already!

  2. I can’t wait to say goodbye to my sprint/nextel account. I’ve written about it a few times. For the last two spring vacations, we went to Cape Hatteras. No service there. After the first year I called to complain when we got back. The man on the phone said sometimes there are problems having a connection in other countries. I said, “What??? Cape Hatteras is on the coast of North Carolina!” I also have connection problems in certain stores and buildings. I had the battery problem with my first phone too. My contract is up this coming spring on one of my phones. The other has a year to go. I’ll probably go with Verizon when I can switch.

  3. Hi Laura,
Oh that is so funny with Cape Hatteras customer care issue! I would have thought it’s in Canada, it’s funny now but I’m sure you were ready to explode at that time. My friends have the same problem too. Yeah, just wait until spring it’s not worth it to pay $150 to terminate the contract. We considered Verizon but my husband is already on AT&T and we only have an addition $10/month to add me. The roll over minutes is also very attractive. As for signal strength, he didn’t have any problems even if we were in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.
If Verizon can give a nice package with FIOS, phone and wireless- that’ll be a difficult package to turn down.
