Hot Geek Rock

I was about to log-on to my Yahoo mail when I saw the front page made give it a second look. Pictured was a dude with a look that screams: Geek! He sports a pair of glasses, cute curls frames his bearded face. With the article title totally contradicting the picture How to Become a Rock Star surely made me want to read what it was all about.I guess I haven’t spent enough time online to hear about Jonathan Coulton. He used to be a software engineer(code monkey as he calls it) made a radical life change buy quitting his job then pursuing his passion becoming a song writer and a singer(read more from the article). What’s so unique about him is he appeals to the geek crowd. His songs echo the sentiments of geeks stuck in the cubicles. His satirical humor surely kept us ROFL(rolling on the floor laughing). His music is a welcome breath of fresh air from dulling mainstream formula music backed by music tycoons, he is actually directly funded by his Internet fans from his merchandise and music sales.I don’t play video games but Re: Your Brains has been playing on my head over and over because it certainly rocks! His version of Baby Got Back is hilarious! First time I’ve really understood what the song was all about. I couldn’t understand the rap version, you see.He has neat video interview which pretty sums up his inspiration to his music. I can totally relate with the “internal change” when he became a parent reflected on his song You Ruined Everything(… in a nice way). My husband and I got stuck watching his YouTube videos, much of it has been created by his fans. Actually, it’s the first time we spent about 30 minutes or more on YouTube just watching clips and listening to his songs. JoCo gained two more fans.
I’m certainly surprised at his stage presence(most geeks have stage fright). Some of his songs are actually better in acoustic versions performed live with witty intros. I won’t be surprised if I see him in a Mac commercial on a high dollar SuperBowl slot soon.
